SHSU Update For Week Of Sept. 2

Rec Sports To Help Campus Become ‘Lean Kats’

The Recreational Sports Department will guide SHSU faculty, staff and students “into becoming leaner, healthier individuals” beginning Sept. 13 with its new Lean Kat Club.

During the 10-week program, which is an acronym for "Letting Exercise and Nutrition Keep (you) Active Throughout...," assistant director for wellness programs Mindy Oden and nutrition intern Kari Kooi will teach participants “how to live life by eating and exercising right,” Oden said.

“The ‘...’ (as part of the acronym) is for the individual to decide. It's a neat concept,” she said. “Each week, exercise and nutrition components will be covered, knowledge will be gained and hopefully new habits will be created.”

Sessions will be held from 12:10-1 p.m. every Thursday through Nov. 29, excluding Thanksgiving Day. Participants should bring a sack lunch.

The cost for the program, for which participants must register, is $20 for students and $30 for faculty and staff.

In addition, the Fall Group Fitness Classes schedule has been established for the semester and includes a variety of classes for everyone, including aqua sports, yoga, ball Pilates, kickboxing and hip hop, among others. The complete schedule can be found online.

Other services also available by appointment to Bearkats include massage therapy, nutrition counseling and personal training.

For more information, to register for the Lean Kat Club or to make an appointment for one of the Rec Sport services, contact Oden at 936.294.1307 or mindyo@shsu.edu, or visit http://www.shsu.edu/~rca_www/wellness.

Community To Walk For Heart Association

The Huntsville community will take one step at a time to reach its $30,000 goal for this year’s Walker County Heart Walk on Sept. 22.

The three-mile Heart Walk, sponsored by the American Heart Association, will begin at 8 a.m. with registration at 7:30 a.m. at Bowers Stadium, on the SHSU campus.

The Walker County Heart Walk is a fund-raising activity in which community members can earn prizes based on the amount of money raised. All proceeds benefit the AHA.

While participants can walk individually, members of the SHSU community who would like to be a part of a team may join the group organized by assistant professor of mathematics Jackie Jensen, she said.

SHSU’s teams can be found through the Heart Walk Web site by searching for Sam Houston State University when registering.

Jensen’s team is the Ruth Lane Mathematics Society, and Wyatt Raley, field training officer for the university’s public safety services, has organized a “SHSU Police Department” team. You do not have to be a member of the team’s organization to participate on the Heart Walk team.

Cardiovascular disease and stroke are the No. 1 and No. 3 killers in the United States today, and the American Heart Association has dedicated itself to reduce death and risk from cardiovascular disease by 25 percent by the year 2010.

This year’s Walker County Heart Walk is being held in memory of Paul Bohan, a local educator who died of cardiovascular disease.

For more information, to register or to make a donation to the AHA, call 979.268.0068 or visit http://heartwalk.kintera.org/faf/home/default.asp?ievent=222922.

Sign Language Class Offered For Fall

SHSU students have a new alternative for earning their foreign languages credit.

This semester, the department has instituted an on-campus, for-credit “American Sign Language” class that will be held on Saturdays.

Taught by professor Rob Blair, “FL 141” will be held from 9 a.m. to noon in Evans Building Room 313.

“We will add second semester ASL in the spring ’08, third in the fall ’08 and fourth in the spring ’09, so we will have a running schedule of all four classes necessary to fulfill the language requirement,” said Debra Andrist, chair of the foreign languages department.

Students have until the 12th class day, which is Wednesday (Sept. 5), to add the class to their schedules if they wish to take it this fall, according to the Registrar’s Office.

Schedule additions should be made by having an add/drop form signed by Andrist.

The foreign languages office is located in Evans Building Room 305.

For more information on the class or signing up, call 936.294.1441.

Second Alcohol Summit To Educate Community

Following the success of the first alcohol summit held last year, the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Initiative will present the Second Annual Alcohol Summit Sept. 7-8 in the Lowman Student Center to educate the university community about risky alcohol consumption.

The summit, open to all students, faculty, staff and community members, will place special emphasis on risk management for young adults and the legal and social ramifications of irresponsible choices.

On Friday, faculty and staff will have the opportunity to receive training on recognizing signs and symptoms of alcohol and drug use, curriculum infusion, and available campus resources. A student track will also be available on Friday focusing on peer education.

The Saturday session is also open to faculty and staff but is designed to appeal especially to students.

T-shirts, prizes, educational material and certificates of completion will be given to participants.

Students will have the choice of attending topics from scholarly sessions about the effects of alcohol and drugs in "Chemistry of Alcohol," "Body Shots 2007," and "Your Brain on Drugs," to personal and intimate discussions about the consequences of alcohol and drug abuse in "Reaching Others Through Teaching, Tragedy and a Personal Touch," "Don't Let the Party Go Down in Flames," and "My Alcoholics Anonymous Story."

The keynote speaker is Bernie McGrenahan, an entertainer who has performed for many of today's top music bands, been featured in Las Vegas and on the David Letterman show, and been on numerous cable comedy shows.

Registration forms are available online, or can be picked up in the Student Activities or Dean of Students offices in the LSC, or at Recreational Sports in the Health and Kinesiology Center.

For more information, e-mail org_adai@shsu.edu, or call initiative member Michelle Lovering at 936.294.4347 or ADAI coordinator Rosanne Keathley at 936.294.1171.

'Le Flaneur' To Show Student Perceptions

Students in Matthew Guest’s summer undergraduate seminar course will reveal “The World Around Us” in an exhibit in the Students of Fine Arts Gallery Tuesday through Friday (Sept. 4-7).

“Le Flaneur,” an exhibit of sketchbooks/journals, is the product of a “field study” in which students recorded observations, reflections, and explorations through drawings, writings, collage or photos, according to Guest, assistant professor of art.

“A flaneur (a French word) is a detached pedestrian observer of a metropolis,” Guest said. “The class adopts the concept of urban observer both as analytic tool and as a lifestyle. The sketchbook/journal is introduced as a necessary tool of conceptualization and as a medium of actualization.”

An exhibit reception will be held on Thursday (Sept. 6), at 6 p.m. in the SOFA Gallery.

The SOFA Gallery is located in Art Building A Room 101.

For more information, contact Guest, the exhibit curator, at 936.294.1320.

Professional Organizations Recognize Watts

Watts was awarded the Stripling Award by the Association for Counselor Education and Supervision during the American Counseling Association Conference in the spring.

Named for Dr. Robert O. Striping, the award is given to persons who have contributed to the development and enhancement of professional standards within the counseling profession, according to Watts.

In May, at the North American Society for Adlerian Psychology Conference, Watts received the “Diplomate in Adlerian Psychology.”
