Valentine’s Week To Include Responsibility Lessons
As love begins filling the air with Valentine’s Day
approaching, the Student Health Center and SHSU’s BACCHUS
Peer Education Network will remind students to be sexually
responsible with a week filled with activities designed to
provide information on sexually transmitted infections and
testing, contraception, healthy relationships, and consistent
and correct use of condoms.
Sexual Responsibility Week, which is always the week of Valentine’s
Day, will kick off on Monday (Feb. 12) with “Let’s
Talk About Sex,” at 6 p.m. in Smith-Hutson Building
Room 139.
The event will include Julio Asencio from Planned Parenthood
discussing the importance of sexual responsibility and answering
sex-related questions, as well as providing free condoms and
information about free HIV testing.
On Tuesday, students can test how savvy they are on contraceptives
with a “Contraception Challenge” from 10 a.m.
to 2 p.m. in the Lowman Student Center Mall Area.
That evening, health programming coordinator Michelle Lovering
will moderate a discussion entitled "Sex in the Dark,"
during which students are invited to talk about sexual health
and the mysteries behind male and female thoughts on sexuality
in a dimly lit room, which provides “a sense of anonymity,”
at 5 p.m. in LSC Room 304.
Student couples can test how well they know each other by
putting their relationship to the test on Wednesday with “The
Newly-Met Game,” from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the LSC Mall
Area.
Also on Tuesday and Wednesday, BACCHUS will sell condom bouquets
from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the LSC Mall Area. Individual roses
will cost 50 cents or a dozen for $5.
In addition, a limited number of coupons for free rapid HIV
testing will be distributed at the events. Tests will be held
on Feb. 15 at Planned Parenthood.
"We hope that all students would be sexually responsible
all year round, but this week provides a great reminder to
students,” Lovering said. “In the end, we hope
that students understand that there are always going to be
some risks involved with sexual activity, but with the right
information and the right protective behaviors, one can be
sexually active and healthy.”
