Recipe Book to Benefit Abandoned Animal Rescue

Vittles & Champagne |
Some of the
best-known names in Texas, and a couple of those not so well
known from Huntsville, have responded to a small Conroe publishing
company's fund-raising project for abandoned animals.
Stone River
Press has published a cookbook titled Vittles & Champagne, and plans
to give proceeds to Abandoned Animal Rescue of Tomball. Recipe
contributors include Governor Rick Perry, Senator Kay Bailey
Hutchison, former first lady Lady Bird Johnson, writer Leon Hale,
novelist Clay Reynolds and poet Joyce Pounds Hardy.
Author Paul
Ruffin, distinguished professor of English at Sam Houston State
University, and Beth Miles, Huntsville resident and retired university
employee, also contributed recipes.
Ruffin is a
poet and novelist and director of the Texas Review Press. His
book of essays and non-fiction entitled "Here's to Noah,
Bless His Ark and Other Musings" is also published by Stone
River Press.
Governor Perry
is credited with recipes for "Chuck Wagon Chili" and "Aunt
Gene's Coconut Pie." Lady Bird Johnson contributed her "King
Ranch Casserole" and Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison offered "Ray
Hutchison's Homemade Vanilla Ice Cream."
Clay Reynolds
provided "Never-Fail Turkey" and Leon Hale, "Mimi's
Pancakes." Many of the authors included explanatory essays
along with their recipes, as Ruffin did with his versions of "The
Classic (Southern) Fried Egg Sandwich" and pork tenderloins.
Miles' recipes
are "Summertime Tomato Pie" and "Charlie's Angel
Flake Biscuits."
Also in the
book are recipes for "Dirt Cake" and "Better than
Sex Cake."
Jackie Pelham,
director of Stone River Press, edited and published the book.
Abandoned Animal Rescue is located in Tomball and serves the
Tomball and Magnolia areas.
The book is
available for $15 from Stone
River Press directly or Amazon.com on the Internet. Mail orders can be sent to Stone River Press,
2468 Southline Road, Conroe, TX 77384. Contact Stone River by
phone at 936.321.9699. Ruffin also has copies available in his
office at 152A Evans on campus.
Ruffin said
that " every penny we take in from sales of the books" will
be given to the Tomball organization.
