Joe Weller, retired chairman and chief executive officer
for Nestle USA, will discuss “10 Key Leadership Qualities”
from his book, “A Blueprint for Success,” on Feb.
8.
The speech, sponsored by the Office of University Advancement,
will be held at 9:30 a.m. in the Smith-Hutson Business Building’s
Ron and Linda Mafrige Auditorium.
“As a 37-year veteran of the Nestle company, no one
is more qualified to share his ‘blueprint for success’
than Joe Weller,” said Thelma Mooney, executive director
of development for University Advancement. “His own
business successes, combined with his and his wife’s
contributions to education, make him an ideal candidate to
discuss his secrets with our aspiring future leaders.”
Weller received his bachelor’s degree in business administration
from the University of Tennessee in 1968 and began working
with the Carnation Company, acquired by Nestle in 1985.
He quickly rose through the sales ranks and was named president
and chief operating officer in 1992, president and CEO in
1994, and chairman and CEO in 1995.
During Weller’s tenure, which ended last January, Nestle
USA saw nine consecutive years of financial growth and was
named one of “America’s Most Admired Food Companies”
by Fortune magazine for eight consecutive years.
A strong proponent of education, Weller is actively involved
in Nestle USA’s Adopt-A-School program, in which more
than 1,500 Nestle employees participate by volunteering at
one of the company’s approximately 48 adopted schools
around the country.
Through the program, Nestle employees receive paid time for
their volunteer work.
Weller’s wife, Carol Hail Weller, an SHSU alumna, is
a Life Endowed Member of the university’s Alumni Association.
She shares her husband’s dedication to education through
her volunteer efforts with educational institutions, such
as her active support for SHSU and serving on the university’s
capital campaign Share the Vision Executive Leadership Committee,
as well as helping to arrange for her husband to share his
secrets to success with students across the country, according
to Mooney.
In addition, Weller will give away 150 copies of his book
during the lecture to students in attendance.
The lecture is free, and seats will be available on a first-come,
first-served basis.
