Welcome Week To Show 'There's No Place Like SHSU'

Students will not be in “Kansas anymore,” when Sam Houston State University welcomes new Kats to campus and reconnects returning ones with a week full of events that will show that “there’s no place like SHSU.”

“The Great and Powerful Bearkats” will invite students to follow the yellow brick road as they join the SHSU family for great adventures during Welcome Week, Aug. 24-31.

“Welcome Week is one of our favorite events, and it’s a tradition here at Sam,” said Brandon Cooper, associate director for Student Activities. “We are looking forward to having all the Bearkats back on campus.”

The week will began with New Student Move-In on Saturday (Aug. 24), where different organizations, athletic teams, and some individuals will volunteer to help move Bearkats into their homes away from home.

Following move-in, students will be formally welcomed to SHSU at the New Student Convocation, at 4 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. in the Gaertner Performing Arts Center.

On Sunday, the campus will start hopping as students put on a swimsuit, grab a lei necklace and jump in the Recreational Sports Center’s Pool for the Bearkat Beach Party, from 2-4 p.m.

Then students can head to the Lowman Student Center where the Barnes and Noble University Bookstore will have a VIP night, and students can find out all about the services the bookstore has to offer for the school year. Finally, students can head downstairs to take a look at the Kat Klub Bash, at 6 p.m. in the Kat Klub, on the first floor of the LSC.

Also on Sunday evening the SHSU women’s soccer team will kick off their season against Texas Southern, beginning at 7 p.m. at Pritchett Field.

On Monday morning (Aug. 26) SHSU students will be given the opportunity to live out the university motto and help the Huntsville State Park keep clean. The Bearkat Service Project will start at 8:15 a.m. at the Huntsville State Park.

“It is a great way to give back to the community, and it is a great learning experience for students to participate in a service event,“ Cooper said. “Students can sign up through the Center for Leadership and Service website.”

Also on Monday, Greek Life will host Sneak Peak@Greek in the LSC Ballroom at 3 p.m., and Sammypalooza will feature Aziz Ansari and Nick Kroll in the Kat Comedy Showcase at 8 p.m. in the Johnson Coliseum.

On Tuesday morning at 11 a.m. students can receive help finding their classes by meeting at the LSC fountain. At 8 p.m. the Residence Hall Association will bring back the tradition of the “Party in Old Main Pit,” where there will be a DJ, games and free food.

On Wednesday (Aug. 28) classes start and the fun continues. Casino Night will feature real casino games and real prizes, but won with fake money, in the LSC Ballroom at 6 p.m. Students can get a jump-start in stocking their rooms with prizes such as TVs and iPods.

On Thursday at 11 a.m. in the LSC Mall Area, Unityfest will expose students to the culture and diversity at SHSU through prizes, food and an opportunity to get involved in different activities.

Also on Thursday will be the Kats Meow Karaoke from 5:30-8 p.m. in the LSC Kat Klub and the National Pan-Hellenic Council’s First Party of the Year at 10 p.m. at the Walker County Fairgrounds.

On Friday, the five-year tradition of sharing free hamburgers and hot dogs on the Quad in front of Austin Hall will continue during the Bearkat Picnic, beginning at 11:30 a.m.

“Students can get the food, sit in the quad, eat, and have games and giveaways,” Cooper said. “It’s a great way to end that first week of classes, and it is just very low key, where Bearkats get to mingle and have fun in front of our historic Austin Hall.”

Then at 6:30 p.m. a free dinner and movie will be provided in the LSC Room 320, where students can check out Fast and Furious 6, starring Vin Diesel, Paul Walker and Dwayne Johnson.

Finishing the week strong, the SHSU football team will take on Houston Baptist for the first home game of the season. Before the game there will be the traditional Bearkat Alley Tailgating where students can grab some free food, play games and get ready to cheer on the “the Great and Powerful” Bearkat football team.
