Huntsville McDonald's Creates Scholarship

Many Sam Houston State University students have also worked their way through college at McDonald's, and future McDonald's student workers will have an edge in the new scholarship's selection process.

Dan Leasure, who brought the first McDonald's to its Interstate 45 location in 1974, has announced the establishment of the McDonald's/Dan Leasure Endowment Fund.

Amanda Monteleone, an employee of the new McDonald's at 2502 Sam Houston Ave., recently joined Leasure for the presentation of $5,000 to Bruni Kline, assistant director for university advancement.

Monteleone, now a senior at Huntsville High School, works part time at McDonald's and expects to attend SHSU in the fall of 2001.

"The Sam students have treated us well, as employees and customers, so we decided to give them something in return," said Leasure.

The endowment will provide for one $500 scholarship per semester, beginning in Fall 2002. The scholarship will rotate each year among the departments of theatre and dance, athletics, and accounting, with McDonald's employees who are affiliated with those departments and otherwise qualified being given preference in the selection process.

Leasure said he chose those academic areas because he has enjoyed Sam Houston State University dance productions and basketball games and accounting majors have been especially helpful in his business operations.

In order to be eligible for the scholarships, students must maintain a 3.0 grade point average. Overall management of the endowment and scholarship accounts will be the responsibility of the academic affairs office.

'Fiddler on the Roof'

Performances are at 8 p.m. in the Mainstage Theatre of the University Theatre Center, with a 2 p.m. matinee April 7.

The story takes place just after the turn of the 20th Century in Anatevka, a small village in Czarist Russia which is populated by both Jews and Christians. Tevye, a religious Jew, has personal conversations with God and lives by his traditions. He is repeatedly asked to bend tradition to permit his daughters to marry the men they love.

Further complicating Tevye's life is periodic government sponsored pogroms and dispossessions. One historical result was the emigration of millions to the United States in the period 1890-1920.

Russia was also alive with revolutionary resistance to the Czarist government. There were many revolutionary groups both communist and capitalist, authoritarian and democratic. As punishment, criminals, including revolutionaries, were sent to Siberia, a wild frozen land with little civilization. Most never returned.

"Fiddler on the Roof" has been called one of the best musicals ever written. It includes classic songs such as "Tradition," "Matchmaker, Matchmaker," "To Life," "Miracle of Miracles" "Sunrise, Sunset" and "If I were a Rich Man."

International Conference Announced

The conference is sponsored by the International Center of Sociological, Penal and Penitentiary Research and Studies, based in Messina, Italy. The conference has been held in the past in such places as China, France, and Iran, and this is the first time it will be held in the United States.

The sponsoring organization has held annual International Course of Higher Specialization conferences since 1978 as a means of addressing various problems that jeopardize the safety of the international community.

Topics to be addressed this year include socioeconomic factors in policing and the world economy, the future of international law enforcement, and issues involving police cooperation in past years.

Stowe to Present at Warsaw Conference

More than 300 representatives of academic, governmental and corporate institutions worldwide will make presentations on the theme "One Europe? One World?" The president of Poland will open the session. Stowe's panel will discuss "Intellectual Entrepreneurship."

The panel will be moderated by Stefan Kwiatkowski, Stowe's mentor during his studies which led to a doctorate from the Warsaw University School of Management.

Stowe will also participate in the Second Global Conference on Intellectual Entrepreneurship for Sustainable Development sponsored by the UNESCO Chair of Intellectual Entrepreneurship. This conference of scholars from around the world will explore the implications of the knowledge-based economy. It will be held June 28 - July 1 at Nieborow Palace near Warsaw.

Stowe's Warsaw connection began when he completed a tour of active duty as the senior military representative to the Republic of Poland working for the National Security Adviser to the President of Poland in 1994. Poland is now a member of NATO.

In November 1997 Stowe was appointed director, Office of International Programs, a half time administrative position at Sam Houston State University.

Stowe continues to serve in the United States Naval Reserve as adviser to the Commander of the Navy Recruiting Command and as Campus Liaison Officer.

Houston Job Fair is Tuesday

More than 100 employers are expected to participate. Representatives from national and local corporations and government entities will be accepting r�sum�s and talking to qualified applicants in all career fields for jobs in and out of Texas.

While many participants will be upper class students seeking their first job, the event is also open to all students and graduates. Companies will be recruiting not only for full-time positions but also internship and co-op positions.

The event's organizers encourage even those students who are not seeking employment in the near future to attend to gather information and gain experience in the job hunt process.

They encourage participants to bring multiple copies of r�sum�s, dress professionally, and be ready for on-side interviews.

The event will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Athletics/Alumni Center on the University of Houston main campus. Admission is free.

Business and Government Career Fair

Also participating are Alpha Kappa Psi, the Professional Marketing and Management Association, and the International Business Society.

More than 85 organizations are expected to participate, including such institutions as the FBI, Texas Parks and Wildlife, U. S. Secret Service, Walgreen's, KTRE-TV (Lufkin), and Harris County Sheriff's Department.

Anyone planning to participate in this free event can register online, print out a registration form from the undergraduate admission Website or call 936.294.1844.

Activities begin with check-in from 7:30 - 8:20 a.m. in Johnson Coliseum, located at Ave. H & 20th Street in Huntsville. The general assembly begins at 8:30 a.m.

Help desks will be set up in the coliseum for general admissions questions, financial aid, new student orientation, residence life and Army ROTC.

Participants will have the opportunity to visit two academic areas to receive information and ask questions. At 11:30 a.m. student activities will present a program including entertainment by the Orange Pride Dance Team and SHSU cheerleaders.

Lunch will also be available beginning at 11:30 a.m. in Cafe Belvin, at a cost of $4. Campus tours and a residence hall open house are scheduled from noon to 1:30 p.m.

Field School Bazaar

The Field School is seeking donations of items, and renting booth space. Ten-by-ten foot antique/craft show booths are available for $30 for both days.
