SHSU Update for Week of April 20
SHSU Name Safe
Sam Houston State University President James F. Gaertner told the campus community
this week that the university's name is safe, at least for a while.
As a result of a bill in the Texas Legislature to change the name of Southwest
Texas to Texas State University, the board of regents that governs both institutions
considered whether to seek name changes for all schools in the system--such as
Texas State University--San Marcos.
"The name proposed for Sam Houston State University was: Texas State University
- Sam Houston," Gaertner said in an e-mail memo to faculty and staff.
"Following a thorough and thoughtful discussion, the Regents decided to not pursue
the inclusion of such an amendment. Therefore it appears that there is no danger
of our name being considered for change in the immediate future."
Gaertner thanked the many people, both on and off campus, who expressed concern
about the possible name change.
"I was able to pass that information on, and it was considered during the Regents'
deliberations," he said. "In my judgment, we did what we truly considered to be
in the best interest of Sam Houston State, and I deeply appreciate your efforts
and support."
The SHSU Opera Workshop and Chorale are having a party-performance
on Friday and Saturday (April 25-26) at 7:30 p.m. in the Recital Hall.
They will present the second act (known also as the party scene) of the beloved
romantic comedy, "Die Fledermaus" or "The Revenge of the Bat."
The popular operetta draws its humor from mistaken identity, men's and women's
infidelity, and a slight bit of "the bubbly." Set in the palace garden of
the Russian Prince Orlofsky, the entire act if filled with the lilting melodies
of the "Waltz King" Johann Strauss Jr.
Special guest appearances include the SHSU voice faculty which includes Laura
Avery-Hill, Wayne Barrett, Barbara Corbin, Kristin Hightower, Mary Kay Lake and
Christopher Michel.
Tickets for the event are available at the door and are $8 general admission and
$5 for students and senior citizens.

The Art Department at Sam Houston State University will be exhibiting student
artwork Thursday (April 24) from 5 to 7 p.m.
An Open House will allow visitors to tour the department and view works by current
art students. All areas of art will be represented, including painting, drawing,
ceramics, sculpture, printmaking, jewelry, graphic design, and computer animation.
The Juried Student Art Exhibit, featuring selected student works, is on view
through May 9 in the Gaddis Geeslin Gallery at the Art Department. A reception
for this show will coincide with the Open House on Thursday. The Gaddis Geeslin
Gallery is open Monday through Friday from noon until 5 p.m.
The public is invited to attend these events and to discover the talents of
Sam Houston State University's art students.
ARAMARK Food Service and the SHSU Department of Residence Life will co-sponsor
a Twilight Breakfast for students on Thursday, May 8, from 10 to 11:30 p.m. in
Café Belvin.
"Twilight Breakfast is scheduled late at night, the time when our students are
most likely to be around, and hopefully already in the study mode---or at least
about to get there," said Dana Grant, assistant director of the Department of
Residence Life.
The breakfast is designed to provide encouragement to students as they prepare
for final exams. In past semesters, professors, coaches, administrators
and support staff have participated by greeting students as they arrive, serving
food, or bussing tables.
"It is a fun way to pass along the idea the Sam Houston state University's faculty
and staff care about our students," said Grant.
