SHSU Update for Week of April 27
SHSU students Brian VanDelist and Jayson Hill were recently elected national president
and southern region vice president, respectively, of Delta Tau Alpha, a national
agricultural honor society.
VanDelist, a junior animal science major from San Antonio, and Hill, a junior
general agriculture major from Cleveland, were elected by delegates attending
the 44th national DTA convention at Sul Ross State University in Alpine.
Both are members of the university's chapter in the Department of Agricultural
Sciences.
Delta Tau Alpha is a national organization whose primary purposes include the
promotion and recognition of high standards of scholarship, leadership, and character
among agricultural students. Membership in the organization is by invitation
only to agriculture majors who rank in the top 30 percent of their university
class. Currently, there are over thirty chapters throughout the United States.
Serving as a national officer will involve much more than simply holding a figurehead
title, according to Dwayne Pavelock, SHSU chapter adviser for DTA.
"Brian and Jayson will work on securing new chapters and improving the national
organization," said Pavelock. "Members currently receive several benefits
by joining the honor society, but the national officers know that so much more
is possible. Serving as a national officer is also a great way for these
young men to hone their leadership and communication skills. "
In addition to the officer elections, SHSU chapter members also participated in
other convention activities, including discussion and voting on major revisions
to the honor society's constitution and bylaws, the Agricultural Knowledge Bowl,
and the Ag Olympics. Other members from Sam Houston in attendance were Jessica
Redden, Adam Jenke, Ashley Ray, and J.R. Metcalfe.
Sam Houston State University Parents' Association officers and volunteers will
be handing out free apples, candy and Scantrons on May 5 and 6 between the Lowman
Student Center and the Smith-Hutson Business Building, starting at 8:30 a.m. and
continuing while supplies last, to help students during final exams.
Each year, the Parents' Association hosts two Apple Days giving out more than
1,200 apples, hundreds of candy bars, and 5,000 Scantrons to Sam Houston students.
The association purchases the items simply to give students a treat before finals.
"We know how stressful final exams can be, so we like to show our support to the
entire student body and hope they each do well on their tests and final projects,"
says Kelly Clements, president of the association.
The Parents' Association is an organization of Sam Houston parents who actively
support students through awarding scholarships and hosting special events. The
association raises funds from member dues and events for its annual scholarships.
The association assists with planning Parents' Weekend each fall semester, meets
with new SHSU parents during summer orientation and hosts a Homecoming tailgate
party in addition to Apple Days each semester.
Parents, guardians and families of Sam Houston students are encouraged to join
the association not only to support students, but also to have a primary link
to the university. Through events like Parents' Weekend and a periodically
published newsletter, members stay involved and informed about campus issues,
events and news.
