Choir, Symphony Combine for Concert
Sam Houston State University's Symphonic Choir and the Symphony Orchestra will
combine for a concert at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church, featuring
music by Rossini, Poulenc and Faure.
The Choir is under the direction of Allen Hightower, and the Symphony under the
direction of Carol Smith.
The program includes Gioacchino Rossini's Overture from La Gazza Ladra, Francis
Poulenc's Concerto for Organ, Strings and Timpani in g minor, and Gabriel Faure's
Requium, Opus 48.
Admission for the concert is $8 for adults and $5 for children.

and E. Don Walker, Sr. Education Center Gallery of the Sam Houston Memorial
Museum is a collection of transitional pictures of Native American life.
"Powwow: Native American Celebration" consists of 54 color photographs with
accompanying quotes and text that capture the joy, tradition, humanity, and
pageantry of Native America from a variety of different tribes.
The photographs were made by Andrew Hogarth, a native of Scotland now based
in Australia, who, over the course of 17 years, has traveled some 135,000 miles
throughout the Great Plains and Southwest regions of the United States, mostly
on small country roads, documenting the lives of Native Americans.
Through portraiture, Hogarth captures the intersection of the traditional and
the everyday. The result is a collection of exceptionally high-quality images
that cut through the stereotype, confusion and ambivalence so often encountered
in photographs of native peoples.
The exhibit will be on display through April 29.
The Sam Houston State University School of Music will host the 41st Annual Contemporary
Music Festival on Tuesday and Wednesday (April 8-9).
All concerts are open to the public and free of admission charge.
The event begins Tuesday evening at 7:30 in the Recital Hall with a faculty and
student chamber music concert.
At 9 a.m. Wednesday Professor Emeritus of Music Michael Horvit from the University
of Houston will lecture in room 201 of the Fine Arts Building. Horvit is
a prominent Houston area composer whose works are often featured on National Public
Radio.
At noon on Wednesday an open rehearsal by the SHSU Wind Ensemble, coached by Horvit,
will take place in room 201 of the Fine Arts Building.
At 2 p.m. a concert featuring the faculty Woodwind Quintet, the Brass Quintet,
and SHSU music students will be held in Killinger Auditorium located in the Beto
Criminal Justice Center.
The festival will conclude at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday with a concert in Killinger
Auditorium. The concert will feature University of Houston piano doctoral
student Kingchi Au, who is writing her dissertation on Hovit's music. She
will provide a spoken narrative before each of her two presentations. The
concert will also feature performances by vocal soloists and by the SHSU Wind
Ensemble.

The Lowman Student Center will be the site of scavenger hunts on Wednesday (April
9) from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. and 4 to 6 p.m.
Students can pick up validation cards at the LSC Information Center. The
hunt will take place at various places in the LSC where students will receive
validations and giveaway prizes. When the validation card is complete students
will turn the card in for a chance to become grand prize winners.
A drawing will be held at the end of the day for a television, microwave, free
use of textbooks for a semester, a one-hour party with free games in the Kat Klub,
and a catered meal for 10, accompanied by SHSU President James Gaertner.
The SHSU Counseling Center is holding its annual Alcohol Awareness and Screening
Program on Tuesday and Wednesday (April 8-9).
The program will be held on the main floor of the LSC from 10 a.m to 2 p.m.
Free screenings and information will be available. There will be activities that
demonstrate the effects of different levels of intoxication on one's performance
including the University Police demonstrating sobriety tests using special goggles
that simulate intoxication.

Henry Howey, professor of music, will present a lecture-concert for the Italy
in America Association at the Italian Cultural Center in Houston Thursday (April
10) at 7 p.m.
Howey's presentation will be in a digital format, and will focus on what he calls
"a vital and profound musical tradition that has sadly been lost to time and technology."
The subject of the presentation is the Italian opera composer Amilcare Ponchielli,
who American movie-goers may recognize for his "Dance of the hours" from Disney's
"Fantasia." Ponchielli was active as a bandmaster in Piacenza and Cremona Italy
from 1862-1872.
He composed and arranged over 300 works for the Cremona (his hometown) city band.
Cremona is well known as the home of some of the world's great violin makers.
Howey has digitized all of Ponchielli's manuscripts and has begun to edit them
for the use of modern bands. He presented three lectures (in Italian) in Cremona
in 2002 on his work with Ponchielli's "lost" manuscripts.
Howey brings a special background to his work as he combines a career as a performer
and musicologist with an affinity for languages.
From 1966 to 1968 he was the associate principal euphonium in the United States
Army Band, participating in White House ceremonies, concerts, and other events
including high level funerals.
In his Thursday presentation Howey will share over 200 images of Cremona, the
municipal band, and the actual scores in Ponchielli's own hand. The music will
consist of recordings from live performances and digital re-creations documenting
the rise of the modern Italian state and the music that Ponchielli created in
response to its birth.
