SHSU Update for Week of Feb. 16
Music enthusiasts will have the opportunity to enjoy a number
of performances by groups within the SHSU School of Music this
week. All presentations are open to the public and free
of charge (except for admission to the basketball games).
Clive Swansbourne will present program six of his eight piano
recitals featuring Beethoven's 32 sonatas. The recital
will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday (Feb. 16) in the SHSU Recital
Hall.
On Monday (Feb. 17), fans at the basketball game between
the Bearkats and UT-Arlington in Johnson Coliseum will have
a chance to hear the SHSU Basketball Band perform. For
those who cannot make it to the game, Fox Sports Southwest will
televise the game live at 7 p.m.
A special performance of the United States Army Band Woodwind
Quintet will take place on Tuesday (Feb. 18) at 7:30 p.m. in
the SHSU Recital Hall.
On Thursday (Feb. 20) Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia men's music fraternity
will perform a musicale at 7:30 p.m. in the SHSU Recital Hall.
A master class, lecture, and guest recital will highlight the
French Saxophone Symposium Friday (Feb. 21) from 11 a.m. to
10 p.m. in the SHSU Recital Hall.
The SHSU Basketball Band will perform again on Saturday (Feb.
22) in Johnson Coliseum beginning at 5 p.m. when the SHSU women's
and men's basketball teams take on the teams from Stephen F.
Austin.

The Department of Health and Kinesiology in concert with the
American Heart Association is sponsoring a 3 on 3 basketball
tournament (men’s, women’s and co-recreational)
on Friday and Saturday (Feb. 21-22).
The finals of the tournament will be played during the half
times of the SFA-SHSU basketball games on Saturday (Feb. 22).
A silent auction will be conducted during the games to raise
additional funds for the American Heart Association. The
proceeds will be utilized to help reduce the nation’s
number one premature killer---cardiovascular disease.
The University Women of SHSU have joined with the Tall Pines
Quilt Guild to raise money for mammograms for uninsured Walker
County women.
Members of the community are invited to participate in the Walker
County Mammogram Fund Benefit Walk on Thursday, Feb. 27, from
11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the Bowers Stadium Track on campus.
There are several ways to contribute to the fund. Participants
can bring pledges for flat donations or for the number of laps
or miles walked.
Also, James Olson's book, "Bathsheba's Breast: Women, Cancer
and History," will be available for purchase, as well as tickets
for a chance to win a quilt made by members of the Tall Pines
Quilt Guild.
All proceeds go to the Walker County Mammogram Fund and will
be matched by the Robert A. Josey Fund.

The College of Business Administration will host the Spring
2003 Business Career Fair on Tuesday (Feb. 18) from 10 a.m.
to 3 p.m. in Johnson Coliseum. The fair is open to students
of all majors.

The Office of Career Services will sponsor a Summer Camp and
Job Fair on Wednesday (Feb. 19) from 12:30 to 4 p.m. in the
Lowman Student Center Ballroom.
Students and alumni are encouraged to attend the event early
in the afternoon.
The SHSU Division of Student Services recently held the annual
Outstanding Leadership In Service Awards in the Lowman Student
Center Ballroom.
The event, which honored a number of employees in the division
for dedication and service to the university, was sponsored
by Thelma J. Douglass, vice president for student services.
During the evening 20 members of the Student Services staff
were recognized for five to 35 years of service.
Awards were presented to Carlton Green for Outstanding Exempt
Employee of the Year and to Phyllis Barrett for Outstanding
Non-Exempt Employee of the Year.
The Team of the Year Award was presented to the Department of
Student Activities.
Eleven Sam Houston State University students will be making
presentations at the Alpha Chi National College Honor Scholarship
Society Convention which will be held in Washington, D.C. March
13-15.
Nine of the students are undergraduates, and two are working
on their masters' degrees. They are members of the Texas
Omicron Chapter of Alpha Chi.

In addition to the presentations, SHSU will also be recognized
when the Distinguished Service Award is presented to Howard
Griffin at the convention's Saturday business meeting.
Griffin is a retired SHSU faculty member and former Texas Omicron
Chapter sponsor.
