SHSU Update for Week of March 9

Teacher Job Fair Rescheduled

The Teacher Job Fair which was originally scheduled for Wednesday (March 12) has been re-scheduled for April 15.

The event will still be held in the Bernard Johnson Coliseum, but the time has been changed to 12:30 to 3:30 p.m.

For more information go the Career Services website at www.shsu.edu/careerservices or call 936.294.1713.

Public Auction Coming Up

SHSU will hold a public auction of surplus items on Saturday, April 5 at 8:30 a.m.

The auction will take place at the property warehouse located in the Sam South Complex, 2424 Sam Houston Ave., in Huntsville.  Items will be available for inspection from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. the day of the sale.

Items will be sold piece by piece or in lots to the highest bidder.  All items will be sold "as is, where is."

Some of the merchandise includes office furniture, appliances, playground equipment, televisions, books, exercise equipment, and vehicles ranging from model years 1991 to 1980.  Vehicles can be removed the day of the sale if paid by cash of check with an original current bank letter of credit guaranteeing payment.  Otherwise, the vehicles will be held for ten working days to allow the check to clear.

The warehouse will shut down on March 19 to prepare for the auction.  University departments will not be able to move articles in or out of the warehouse after that date until the auction is over.

For more information call Wayne Frosch at 936.294.1903 or 936.294.1908.

Nominations Sought for Staff Excellence Award

Nominations are being taken for the SHSU Staff Excellence Award from now through March 28.

Nomination forms are available through the Human Resources Department at 936.294.1068.

Each year the university honors one exempt and two non-exempt staff employees who have demonstrated a commitment to excellence.  Each award includes a financial stipend of $1,200 and recognition at the annual faculty-staff meeting held at the beginning of the academic year.  Thirty-six outstanding employees have been recognized since the award was established in 1991.

Frogge Speaks at Symposium

Stephanie Frogge, director of professional education and training for SHSU's National Institute for Victim Studies, was one of the guest speakers at a victimology symposium held recently at Kansas City Kansas Community College.

The American Society of Victimology was officially founded during the symposium. The new organization will provide standards for training advocates of victims of crime, including those who work in law enforcement, court systems, social work, battered women's shelters, medical hospitals, colleges and universities, and local, state and national levels of government.

More than 40 participants from 14 states, Japan, Canada, Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia attended the two-day symposium.

Radio/Television Faculty Earn Honors

Maryjo Cochran, professor and coordinator of the radio/television program at SHSU, has been named president of the Texas Association of Broadcast Educators for 2003-04.

Jeff Porche, also of SHSU's radio/television program, was elected president-elect for 2004-05.

Twenty-seven colleges and universities in Texas are members of the organization.

Jason Balas, first year radio/television instructor, has been recognized for outstanding work at two film festivals.  He was awarded Best Action Short at the New York International Film Festival for his production entitled "Cuatro." The film was also named Official Selection at the Ohio Independent Film Festival and Market.

Due to the bad weather last week, the Department of Recreational Activities has re-scheduled the semi-annual Poker Walk for Wednesday (March 12) from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The event will begin and conclude in the LSC Mall Area.
