SHSU Update for Week of March 23
Dave Dravecky, former professional baseball pitcher, turned
author and motivational speaker, will be at Sam Houston State University Wednesday
(March 26) as part of the President's Speaker
Series.
Dravecky's lecture will be held at 11 a.m. in the Killinger Auditorium of the
Beto Criminal Justice Center on campus. Students, faculty and community members
are welcome to attend.
Dravecky now makes his living as a professional speaker, addressing a wide variety
of motivational topics to audiences across the country.
His visit to campus will make him the third lecturer in the President's Speaker
Series established by SHSU President James Gaertner in 2002. The goal of the
series is to bring a prominent lecturer to the university each fall and spring
semester.
The Barnes & Noble bookstore on campus will be selling a selection of numerous
titles authored by Dravecky immediately following the lecture.
The SHSU Department of Theatre and Dance will present Rodgers and Hammerstein's
Broadway sensation "Oklahoma!" April 2-5.
The performance will take place on the Mainstage of the University Theatre Center
at 8 o'clock each evening, with an additional 2 o'clock matinee performance on
April 5.
Tickets are $12 general admission and $10 for all SHSU students, faculty, staff
or senior citizens. For reservations or more information, call 936.294.1339
or 936.294.1329.
Deanna Latson, an internationally recognized nutrition educator who has spoken
to over 100,000 people at universities and companies around the world, will
be at SHSU on Tuesday (March 25) to share her thoughts on how to "Eat Right,
Feel Good, and Look Great!"
She will lecture at 5:45 p.m. in the Criminal Justice Center Auditorium.
Her presentation is currently the number one health lecture on the college circuit,
and she has been nominated for Speaker of the Year by the National Association
for Campus Activities.
Latson is a member of the Physicians Committee of Responsible Medicine and leads
motivational seminars for students at Stanford University during the summer months.
Sam Golden, ombudsman for the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, will
speak at SHSU on April 2 as part of the College of Business Administration's
Executive-in-Residence program.
He will address topics related to the supervision of bank and the banking industry
beginning at 9:30 a.m. in the Smith-Hutson Building's Mafrige
Auditorium.
All members of the university community are invited.
The SHSU Buyers' Group for the 2003 Walker County Fair is seeking donations to
continue the tradition of helping prospective SHSU students by purchasing their
projects at the Walker County Fair.
The tradition began approximately 20 years ago when a group of SHSU faculty
and staff decided to pool their funds and purchase a project in SHSU's name.
Since that time the group has tried to purchase as many projects as funds
will allow.
"Sam Houston State University is a partner in the community, engaged in supporting
activities that encourage scholarships and higher education," said Debbie
Birdwell, one of members of the group.
Those who would like to participate or make a donation should contact Debra
Holl at 936.294.1089 or Birdwell at 936.294.1017.
