Coliseum To ‘Serve Up’ Themed Volleyball Games

The Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum staff will ‘serve up’ a night of contests and prizes on Oct. 17 for the SHSU versus Texas State University-San Marcos volleyball game.

The Hawaiian-themed game, “Serves Up,” will begin at 7 p.m. and will include a limbo contest and other games, prizes, concession stand specials and “lots of fun,” according to coliseum event coordinator Brian Booker.

“We’re going to have themes for all the games, and this game will be the first big event,” Booker said. “We want to get more people to come out to the volleyball games.”

Throughout the day, coliseum staff and volleyball team members will be dressed in theme-appropriate clothing and encourage volleyball attendees to do so as well. In the future, they will be giving awards to game attendees for the ‘Best Dressed’ within that game’s theme, Booker said.

Douglass Has Article On OneCard Published

A recent issue of College Planning & Management includes an article by Thelma Douglass, vice president for services, on the process that led to adoption of the Bearkat OneCard at Sam Houston State University.

Douglass was appointed by James F. Gaertner, SHSU president, to head a task force of campus and community representatives that researched a number of options, resulting in what is believed to be one of the most innovative programs of its kind.

The Bearkat OneCard is designed to handle all existing identification card services, such as the meal plan and food service transactions, accessing library and recreational facility services, and having potential for additional features such as building access. Users have an option to open a OneAccount as well.

' Cardholders can get cash from ATMs, write checks, send and receive money electronically from their accounts, and monitor the details of their accounts online," Douglass wrote.

Approximately 20 Huntsville merchants have signed up in a program to offer discounts through a rewards program to Bearkat OneCard users.

Annual Fund Kicks Off

The faculty and staff Annual Fund committee are encouraging all members of the university to contribute to the 2003-2004 faculty and staff portion of the Annual Fund, which kicked off last week.

“Faculty and staff participation in giving is so important -- not only for the needed gifts, but it also helps as the development office markets our case to alumni and friends,” said Cindy Truax, Annual Fund assistant director of development. “Giving should begin with us!”

Contributions to the Annual Fund support scholarships, faculty and staff developments, student activities, academic program enrichment and technology and equipment upgrades. Gifts can be earmarked for SHSU’s greatest need, or any particular area of interest.

“Every gift, regardless of size, combines with others for a significant total,” said faculty and staff Annual Fund committee co-chairs Laverne Warner and Keith Jenkins.

Faculty and staff may contribute to the Invest In Our Future Campaign by sending a check or credit card number to the Office of University Advancement, at Box 2537; by payroll deduction; or online at www.shsu.edu/giving. Payroll deduction forms may be obtained at the Office of University Advancement, or by contacting Truax at 936.294.4388 or by e-mail.

The deadline for contributions is Nov. 3.

Other members of the faculty and staff annual fund committee, include: Donna Artho, Sandy Baker, Jerry Bruce, Joey Chandler, Cutty Gilbert, Kathy Gilcrease, Sherry Henke, John Holcombe, Wes Johnson, Phyllis Kennedy, Suzette Kohers, Maureen McIntyre, Cheryl Patton, Daughn Pruitt, Dorothy Roberson, Carol Shaw, Dave Smith, Vic Sower, Debbie Stubbs, Terry Thibodeaux, Joellen Tipton, and. Testing Center Examines Students’ Needs

The SHSU Testing Center, which opened in January 2003, administers various exams throughout the year to help meet the needs of both students and non-students for different programs and fields.

This semester, the center will administer the Examination for the Certification of Educators in Texas (EXCET) / Texas Examinations of Educator Standards (TExES) Test on Oct. 4; the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) subject test on Nov. 8 and Dec. 13; and the Law School Admissions Test on Oct. 4 and Dec. 6.

In addition, the Texas Higher Education Assessment (THEA) test, formerly called the TASP test, which students are required to pass in order to attend college, will be administered on Nov. 8 and again next year on March 6, April 24, June 19 and July 31.

The center also offers College Level Exam Program (CLEP) tests, the ACT, ACT Residual, DANTES Subject Standardized Tests (DSST), Scholastic Assessment Test, and the THEA-QT, the quick version of the THEA test.

The Testing Center charges a registration/administration fee for each exam held during the week in addition to the regular test fee charged by the testing companies. In addition to the cost of the test, fees for each exam for currently-attending SHSU students are as follows: ACT Residual-$35 for all examinees; CLEP-$15; DSST-$25; THEA-QT-$25; TEXAS COMPUTER-BASED TESTING COLLABORATIVE (TCBTC): $25 for all examinees; and all other exams: $25. Administration costs for non-SHSU students are $5 more, unless specified.

Due to limited seating, appointments for testing must be made before a requested testing date, and reservations are made on a first come-first served basis.

Test packets can be picked up the center office, located in Academic Building IV Room 102. For more information on the center, tests, policies or test dates, call 936.294.1025, e-mail them at test.ctr@shsu.edu or visit the center’s Web site.

Sociology Faculty Work With Other Universities

The SHSU department of sociology has recently been recognized as one the leading departments in the area through invitations to participate in a number of activities locally and internationally.

"Houston-area junior colleges are in the process of developing curricula that include globalization based courses such as government, anthropology, economics and sociology," said Alessandro Bonanno, chair of the department.

"We were asked to provide instruction to faculty through a workshop to review and update literature on and findings in globalization, which is the academic focus of our own department," said Bonanno.
Bonanno conducted the workshop on Sept. 26 at the Marriott Hotel in the Galleria area of Houston. Approximately 40 professors from a number of area institutions attended.

Earlier this month Bonnano was the keynote speaker at an international conference on "Global Production Circuits" in Guadalajara, Mexico. His address, "The Contradictions of Globalization," was delivered in Spanish.

He and other members of the sociology faculty will be traveling abroad in coming months to participate in globalization activities with other universities.
